Finally watched Man of Steel, (spoilers and rant to follow) which I have dubbed Neck Snap Man (of Steal). One of the enduring concepts of comic book writing is to place the heroes in situations where there are fundamentally no right choices. In this we see the hero overcome this dilemma through creative means, finding a third path. In the Dark Knight we are given an example of the Prisoners Dilemma which is resolved by average people rising to the challenge. Instances where the hero fails their dilemma and selects one of the options presented are shown as moments of failure, such as the death of Robin and Gwen Stacy or Rachel Dawes. (Okay, a lot of time based dilemmas here but those are the ones coming to mind at the moment.) Superman, at least in my mind, epitomizes the concept of finding a better way. Here, in Man of Steel, we are presented with a character that is taught to hide above all else, which seems to greatly demolish the value of the classic Smallville upbringing and when faced with his dilemma ultimately fails to live up to any previous incarnation. While I know this was meant to be the darker, edgier Superman ultimately it seems like Hancock (yes the Will Smith superhero) would have done a better job. Rant over, heres HISHEs take on the whole thing which does a good job of summing up the other glaring plot hole in the flick. https://youtube/watch?v=CjSNLmb0Ndw
