Finally watched my copy of Hamlet starting David Tennant and Patrick Stewart. Hamlet really is one of my favorite plays ever. I cant say its been recently but I have read it, on my own not as a school assignment, and enjoyed it. Ive seen all the incarnations of it. At least all I know about. And I have to say this IS my favorite version. I know what your thinking Oh its just because its The Doctor and Captain Picard. Honestly, that may be why I bought it, but not why its brilliant. Both outside theyre most notable roles are fantastic actors and they truly bring their A Game to these roles. Any fan of Davids knows he can convey so much emotion with just a slight change of his facial expression. Ive never watched a Hamlet portrayed with such raw emotion. And Patrick being a classically trained actor fit into the role of Claudius like he was born to play it. He portrays Hamlets uncle with such a manipulative warmth you believe he was capable of manipulating both the affections of both the queen and kingdom. This version of Hamlet is set in more modern times, but not in that over-the-top Caridigans music video that was Romeo and Juliet. Gone are the tunics and doublets replaced by three piece suits and t-shirts. I could go on and on about how much I liked this, but the fact that Im taking the time to write anything about it at all is a testament of its worth.
