Finding an article titled: 40 Problems I have with ‘The Real Silent Hill Experience I must make commentary as this goes along because its something I want/wish to present here too. Yes. This bugs be that much. Source: punctualdork/post/27985435672/40-problems-i-have-with-the-real-silent-hill ----- The ones I find contradicting I will detail here, but ONLY the ones I want to counter. If you want to read them all and what he finds to his theories. You have the link, so lets begin! Him: 1. You make the point that the original Silent Hill’s graphics still hold up today and that the tank-esque control style still works. I (like most) would have to disagree with that statement. While I do love the original game, its graphics clearly do not meet today’s high standards as character models lack detail (outside of cut scenes), body movements are not fluid or natural, and blood looks like little red lego bricks. The tank-style gameplay may have been workable at the time, but outside of allowing the camera to make its own unique movements it did little to improve the Silent Hill experience overall. I get why you hold the first Silent Hill in such high regard, but just because you like something doesn’t mean you should be ignoring its failings. Me: Why must you point out the graphics first? Not all horror games must have good graphics or any games in general. Hell, we went from calling 2-D to Pixel Art. See the contradiction? Moving on seeing that there isnt other points to make on this one. Go play Imscared or I See You. Great games! Imscared: gamejolt/games/other/imscared-a-pixelated-nightmare/10058/ I See You: gamejolt/games/other/i-see-you/13843/ Him: 2. While grounding your arguments in factual evidence is always the optimal way to make a point, it IS possible to read too far into every symbol, piece of dialogue, and written note in the game. For instance, many people take the internal monologue for the painting in Henry’s apartment in Silent Hill 4: The Room, “He was never seen again” (with reference to James) as to mean that Silent Hill 2’s ‘In Water’ ending was cannon. If you want to believe that, that’s fine, but realistically speaking if James HAD survived the events of Silent Hill 2, he probably would have left his previous life behind and started over somewhere new. Not everything in Silent Hill is to be take at face value. Me: Actually... as good as this theory sounds, you cant say In The Water was a CANNON Ending. Though the developers had left it open ended, no one knows for certain what ending truly happened and all because someone disappears doesnt mean theyre necessarily dead. Ever question to yourself if Silent Hill 2 is happening at the same time as Silent Hill 4? Just think of that theory. Him: Henry. Me: Thats the name of the guy in Silent Hill 4. Not Silent Hill 1. IF you are to publish an article about Harry Mason, or anyone ELSE from Silent Hill, always remember to use to correct names. Thanks! Him: 3.You stipulate that Henry chose to drive his daughter to Silent Hill because of the spell used by the cult. There is no factual evidence to support this. In fact, the creators have stated that Henry and his daughter were driving THROUGH Silent Hill before the accident. Is it that hard to believe that as soon as she came in contact with the town the spell started to draw her in? Me: *facepalm* -points- AND I QUOTE FROM SILENT HILL 1 Dahlia: Youve been a ghastly little pest, havent you Alessa? I was careless, thinking you couldnt escape from our spell. But Mommy didnt know how much youd grown. Thats why I couldnt catch you all by myself. But what a pity, yes? Now youre half indebted to this man for his help. (AND) Dahlia: Well use a magical spell. Feeling this childs pain, its sure to come. DID YOU EVEN PLAY THE FIRST GAME?! Him: 4. Regardless of what you say or think, Good+ isn’t the only possible canonical ending. We know based on Silent Hill 3 that Harry did leave the town with a little girl, implying that it could either be Good or Good+. That said, if we were to consider the merits of later entries in the franchise for even a second we would see that Cybil didn’t make it out of Silent Hill (according to Silent Hill: Homecoming) and the Bad ending has the same canonical merits as Silent Hill 3’s plot according to Shattered Memories - whether you like it or not. Me: Ill let you find the flaws in this paragraph. Him: 6. You really can’t infer that the town’s supernatural properties are a result of the events of the first game. Maybe Alessa’s situation unleashed it’s full power, but the town has always been a bit of an odd duck. Long before there were mines or before it became a resort town infested with cultists, Silent Hill featured numerous instances of people treating others badly. The worst of which was probably the native population that first inhabited this ‘sacred’ place. Past Life, the only completely original Silent Hill comic (thank you Tom Waltz), features Silent Hill during the times of ‘manifest destiny’ - as you might imagine, very few natives survive the onslaught of Americanism and the ENTIRE TOWN essentially becomes a massive native burial ground. As a result, long before the events of the first Silent Hill, characters have to deal with monstrous visages and a multitude of mind-f*cks generated by the town itself. NEVER has Team Silent ever stated that the town couldn’t generate otherworlds or creatures before the events of the original Silent Hill. This argument is a fallacy of your overreaching. Me: The Comics are horrible in terms of stories. They arent related to the damn plot! I cant believe you would use them as a defiance. However, the town being a bit of an odd duck, I have to agree. Its been present in the original games. Him: 8. There is no indication that Angela is looking for her brother in Silent Hill 2. We know that she has a brother, but it is apparent that she killed her father AND brother before the events of Silent Hill 2. Me: Weeeeeeeeeeeeellllll No. No really. There was indication that the Father may have been killed by Angela. NOT her brother. I would need more evidence from you to show your proof. Him: 9. Angela doesn’t want to KILL her mother in Silent Hill 2 - that’s not why she’s looking. She has a false memory of her mother’s kindness and seeks her out due to her fractured mental state and child-like regression. This is why it’s so powerful when she finally sees her mother (or at least a visage of her mother generated by the town) and feels dejected. Me: Umm. yeah ok. Thats more of a theory. But I can see that plausible. Him: 14. Silent Hill 3’s ending song is not the worst in all of video gaming; that would be ‘Eyes On Me’ in Final Fantasy VIII. Me: Thats all a matter of OPINION! I actually like that song. Him: 15. Your statement, “Silent Hill 3 should have been where the franchise stopped.” is a little too subjective for a “Factual Analysis” like this. The series was successful - commercially and critically - to think that you would want the series to stop because it hadn’t yet had a less-than-spectacular entry is really quite foolish. Plenty of amazing franchises have bad games and it doesn’t exactly hurt the series’ quality (Devil May Cry comes to mind immediately). Me: Look at what happened to Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Assassins Creed (just to name a few) then bring this up again. I have to disagree with you there. Him: 16. I like the boiler room fire theory a lot, but you can’t cite a memo that was excluded from the NA release as factual evidence of its occurrence. First of all, that same news paper clipping could have also been fabricated by the Order to cover-up their activities at the Gillespie house. Secondly, it is known that a great amount of Fire is required for the demon’s seed. And you can’t cite Heather not needing to be burned to a crisp in Silent Hill 3 as reason for why a fire sacrifice isn’t required because her previous incarnation WAS burned…maybe that’s enough. At the end of the day, as much as I want to prescribe to your theory, it is only a THEORY. Until a legitimate member of Team Silent EXPLICITLY states that this is what happened (no, the memo doesn’t count), I can’t and won’t prescribe. Me: Yeah ok. You said it and remember its all just a THEORY. A GAME THEORY! Him: 17. Me: Way too long to post. Sounds like youre ranting. Great to know you research, but the version of Samael is considered Satan in Silent Hill. Remember. its how the town sees your desires. Not always according to history books, but what the town can fabricate. You just sound like youre getting defensive. Calm down. Him: 25. Silent Hill games can exist without a Flashlight and Radio. They also can exist without mentioning Alessa and The Order. Changes in the formula aren’t something that should be scorned. Me: Yeah ok. Sure. Try telling that to me again when you play through Shattered Memories. You had no damn gun, cult or whatever it was a re-imagining pile of whatever the hell that didnt sell too well. Sorry, but that game was a cop out. I guarantee you that the reason why PT (Playable Teaser) took off was because it still had the elements of Silent Hill. How much of an idiot are you writing this so called article right now? The games have always been about three things: Flashlight, Map and Radio. The Cult is necessary for the manifestation of MONSTERS. Duh. Thought forms and what have you..... Him: 36. I think your points regarding the “Re-imagining” of the first Silent Hill title need to be examined. Yes, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a continuation of Silent Hill’s Bad ending, but what if it also means that the events of Silent Hill 3 were complex products of Cheryl/Heather’s mind; a fantasy she created to maintain her previous illusions. Much like that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where Buffy was in the Mental Institution, it is meant as a what if scenario that fundamentally tangents from the “canonical” part of the series. You argue that it shouldn’t be accepted despite being published by Konami because you can’t accept that it doesn’t actually REWRITE Silent Hill so much as it creates its own universe. You also argue that if this was done with a franchise like Star Wars every fan would have a fit. GUESS WHAT. This has happened before to a franchise LIKE Star Wars. JJ Abram’s 2009 flick Star Trek FUNDAMENTALLY deviated from what many consider to be canon in order to use the original story as a spring board into a new plot. Audiences and Critics everywhere loved it. Proof positive that sometimes fans need to take their heads out of their asses and learn to just accept new things. Me: Shattered Memories still sucked as a what if and re-imagining. Cheryl/Heather experiencing such shouldnt have happened IF it were a part of the story. Star Trek was good, it switched a few things around is all, stop being picky. However, the core of what MADE Star Trek, Star Trek is still there. In what of the RE-IMAGINING OF SILENT HILL SHATTERED MEMORIES STATES THAT THERE IS A CULT?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNEEE. Im done screaming at you for not understanding. Him: 37. You don’t get to choose which titles are and are not part of the Silent Hill franchise. A brand doesn’t belong to fans. If it exists with the franchise name and has trademark elements of the series, accept it and move on. Me: No. We dont, sure, but fans are what make the series. If it continued down the path, sadly enough to say. There would be NO SILENT HILL LEFT. Look at what happened to Assassins Creed. Really. I hate using it as an example. But Ubisofts Stock dropped right when problems arisen. So, YES fans do in a sense make the games if the story is still well told. However, if people think that going in another direction in a game isnt considered the right move. Unless its an uncannon stand alone sequel like Silent Hill 2 Him: 38. Re-imaginings DO NOT require that you keep the same underlying story. The whole point of a re-imagining (in any medium) is to take the base point and take it into a completely new direction. Me: NO! Look at Batman. Still the underlying story of Bruce Wayne is it NOT?! How about Star Trek? Spock is still the same. Not going to continue that element. Him: 39. The argument that a Silent Hill game can’t exist without the cult or Alessa is a weak one. Case in point: Silent Hill 2. Me: HELLO!!!!!!!! DID YOU MISS THE REBIRTH ENDING?! THE OLD GODS?? DONT MAKE ME GET JAMES SUNDERLAND!! Him: 40. The crux of your arguments is that Team Silent’s views are the be all and end all of the Silent Hill universe. This narrow-minded view would imply that the series was non-canonical post Silent Hill 4: The Room. This doesn’t exactly make sense though. Plenty of excellent series continued to exist after the departure of creative staff. Should every Final Fantasy title released after Hironobu Sakaguchi left Sqaure not be considered Final fantasy? No. Great games aren’t built on key people - they’re built on great ideas. Newer developers may have taken the series in different directions, but at least they’re trying something new with the aim of creating something good. B*tching and moaning that every game has sucked since your favourite people stopped caring about the series just makes you sound like whiny, narrow-minded, elitist fans and to be honest, being attached to that kind of mentality weakens all of your arguments. Me: Unless its a James Bond 007 Film. I dont agree with that. Final Fantasy is going to be ending soon enough if they dont pick up the pace. Period. Again, Their hearts arent in the story. Sure. Tomm Hulett COULD have done a good job with Silent Hill if he had stuck to the roots. ----- Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know your thoughts!
