Finished interview number 3 today for a piece I am making toward our Awa exhibition and I have a few areas (well more than a few!) that I need to start researching further. Simple things like what are waterworks? whats a weir? how is our fresh water used and siphoned out? what are koaro? in order to understand more about the territory we are working in. All good! This has got me really sparked and interested further in our history, more than that, the building of our infrastructure here in Aotearoa. Those first decisions that were made that then set the pathway for the layers and layers of man made traces/structures that have changed us and our whenua so much. I enjoyed my interview today because the person I spoke with offered a very different (sometimes challenging and gave me slight heart tremours!) lens. I sat there and kept building. Its not so much about this persons integrity and passion for what they do and are, its just the differences that stop us connecting deeper from one lens to another. Anyway, one of my questions now is around how do we come together under a korowai that engages our tikanga marae as the base or foundation? and not as an adhock thing. This is a massive piece of work but something I got interested in more today.
