Finishing strong down in August and September was a big key as Jon Matlack and Jerry Koosman turned their season around. On july 30, Jon Matlack was 7-14 with a 3.51 ERA, not a bad ERA for a 7-14 record, but then Matlack got going, Matlack went 7-2 the rest of the season, In fact he could of finished 15-15, after pitching a 4 hit complete game shutout with 9 strikeouts on September 22 vs the Cardinals his last game of the year he lost 1-0 pitching 8 innings and allowing only one run in a complete game loss to the Chicago Cubs. Matlack finished 14-16 with a 3.20 ERA, in 242 innings he struck out 205, walks a little high at 99 for the season , 14 complete games and 3 shutouts. Jerry Koosman on August 14 was 8-14 with a 3.47 ERA then he got going winning 6 of last 7 games finshing 14-15 with a 2.84 ERA 12 complete games and 3 shutouts in 263 innings. Tom Seaver was great all through the year 19-10 a 2.19 ERA in 290 innings with 251 strikeouts ,18 complete games and 3 shutouts. They didnt do that nonsense about shutting down pitchers in September which I hate, they were stronger in September, Thanks
