Fire Update from 12:38pm: ALTURAS, Calif., Aug. 22, 2013 – Over the past 24 hours, the Modoc Interagency Communications Center has dispatched resources to approximately twenty fires. Nearly 2,000 lightning strikes have occurred across the forest. The majority of the fires are located on the west side stretching between Adin and Lava Beds National Monument. In addition, at least six are north of Alturas on the Devil’s Garden Ranger District and several are on the Warner Mountain Ranger District. The fires are reported at one acre or less in size except for the Whittmore Fire near Big Sage Reservoir at approximately 40 acres. Firefighters have contained several of the fires and suppression efforts continue on the others. Over 100 resources from local, private, state and federal entities are assigned to fire management operations on the Modoc National Forest. When necessary, aircraft are being used to assist with aerial observations and monitoring. The National Weather Service forecast shows thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusty winds for Thursday.
