Fire destroyed parts of a building at Petrotrin’s Pointe-a-Pierre refinery yesterday. Petrotrin stated that security personnel on patrol observed smoke emanating from the roof of the building during routine checks around 4.05 a.m. The building which houses offices is located in the vicinity of the West Area Maintenance Office. Further checks revealed fire coming from the roof of one of the offices. Petrotrin fire department and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service were contacted and the blaze was contained by 5.40 a.m., a release from the company stated. Petrotrin said that there were no reports of casualties and the fire did not threaten any major installations. Three vehicles parked in close proximity to the building had superficial damage to the bumpers due to scorching, the company stated. Petrotrin fire department personnel gave the all clear to resume normal operations at around 6.45 a.m. Petrotrin president Khalid Hassanali and other senior refinery, operations, security and HSE personnel visited the scene. An internal investigation team has been appointed to investigate the cause of the blaze. Last Wednesday a leaking old gas line being used as a water line by Petrotrin caused discomfort amongst residents in Penal who complained of a gas scent. Petrotrin stated that upon investigation, it was determined that a line being used to pump dam water from Parrylands to the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery developed a leak. Petrotrin set up a team inclusive of health, safety and environmental and operations personnel. The line was immediately isolated and repaired.
