Firearm Safety: You must know and adhere to fundamental firearm - TopicsExpress

Firearm Safety: You must know and adhere to fundamental firearm safety each and every time you handle a gun. The rules are simple and are easy to follow. Accordingly, things that are easy to do are also easy NOT to do. When safety is ignored, bad things can happen. Safety rules were developed to prevent those bad things from occurring. In this referenced story, a police officer blew off one of his fingers with a .380 caliber handgun. How did this happen? Easy! He pointed a loaded gun at his finger and pulled the trigger. Why did he shoot his finger? He violated a few fundamental firearm safety rules. For one, always assume that a firearm is loaded until you have checked it. After checking it, you might want to double-check and triple-check just to make sure that you know whether it is loaded or not. Second, you never point a firearm at something that you do not want destroyed - like your finger. Finally, you never pull a trigger until you have either pointed the gun in a safe direction or at a lawful target and you are ready to fire. In all, it is the officers fault for shooting off his finger. He ASSUMED that the clerk gave him an unloaded gun. NEVER ASSUME that a firearm is unloaded until YOU have checked it. If you do not know how to check a firearm to inspect whether it is loaded, you have no business handling a firearm. Moreover, the clerk also violated a fundamental safety rule. One should NEVER give a firearm to another person - including a police officer - until you have removed the ammunition source, verified that all of the ammunition has been removed, and have opened the action to ensure it is cleared. Both guys were wrong but the ultimate blame rests with the officer. liveleak/view?i=30b_1421174383
