First, I must say, I am guilty too. And I wont change a thing by saying this and will probably piss off a lot of people. But what happened to us? Yes- we who drank out of hoses and could ride our bikes without helmets, and hang out at our neighbors houses til dinner without worry and such? What happened where we now sit alone and toot our own accomplishments and seek acclaim and pity and causes that none of us could ever publicly proclaim on a street corner? We have friends we dont know, spend time with, or could even recognize while passing by on a street. We post, we like, we comment, and put things out there that we feel makes us more wise, more socially in tune, more popular, helpful, or likeable. And for what? To pad our own egos and dispel our insecurities? We are the pretty people now who no one really knows. We are the digitized new order of social engagement without commitment or physical engagement. Yes, I do have friends on FB who care and are true. But I long for the old days when we used to actually hang out, drink from hoses, throw frisbees, make and SEE each other laugh face-to-face, and even once in a while hold a hand or pat someone on the back. Now, we can all just stay at home and be bffs online and never really commit or engage one another one-on-one. It is so nice that we are all so happy now because we can type whatever we want, click, and send.
