+First Interview It is not bad for a man who left his university education incomplete. It is hard to believe for his lovers that Mr. Bill Gates is mortal. As it is said all the accumulated wealth remains in the world after death. He is, therefore, utilizing his wealth to providing happiness of life to the needy. He says he is certainly living better in terms of food and clothes. Wealth loses its value after touching saturation point. Its utility or better usage lies in the formation of an organization to provide resources to the poorest people of the world. Mr. Gates is the owner of an estate by the side of a lake in Washington. Its worth is almost 150 million dollars (95 million pounds). It boasts of a swimming pool with a musical system under water. A common man can, surely assess his opulence. Becoming such a rich man is no guarantee for Mr. Bill Gates to achieve a permanent place in history but introducing computer in everyday life might award him this status. Mr. Bill Gates is a restless man even at 57. He craves to do something more. And that is elimination of a disease like Polio which has wiped out countless lives by now. Mr. And Mrs. Bill Gates has given 28 billion dollars to charity foundation and more than 8 billion dollars for the improvement of international health. He says he discussed with his wife in length that they are the luckiest to attain this wealth and now how to repay it. That it should leave lasting impact on the world. Both of us worked for Microsoft and observed to find out with help of able innovators how the things are working. Then one can work dramatically wonderful. We are focusing on the aid to the poor of the world which guides them to vaccination. You can get rid of any malady forever by working on it as we are doing against Polio. This has only so far been done against smallpox. Polio is being considered particularly in this regard. If we eliminate it once and for all then there would be no need to incur expenditure on it. Its elimination will be a gift for the generation to come. We can surmise why this is the concern of Mr. Bill Gates. He has always endeavored to do the things conspicuously and knows through Microsoft how strong the bugs and the germs of disease are. Polio exists in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Death tolls heavy in these countries because of this disease. It is a formidable task to eliminate it from these countries. The greatest impediment in its eradication from these countries is the preaching of the notion from the Islamic organizations that giving of doses against Polio is for birth control and expansion of western evils and not for Polio. In Pakistan, health workers of this programme have paid its price by the losses of their lives. Mr. Gates says that all such activities will never hamper him. He further says that this thing enforces us to negotiate with the government of Pakistan and renew the pledges as how to improve the arrangements so that the lives of the lady health workers are safeguarded who provide Polio vaccine which is a divine duty. Mr. Bill Gates tells that he and Melinda had been discussing on it even prior to their marriage. At my 40th year Microsoft was my passion. There came a tremendous change in me when I decided the basic purpose of my life. It was a big change. Possibly you may understand two common things working behind it i.e. visiting to the scientists, facing the tough challenges and the belief of the people in you that you can do it. Mr. Gates is still working as a chairman of Microsoft. The institution is emerging like a giant. Google and Apple programs with their novelty are strengthening it. People say if Mr. Bill Gates works whole heartedly for it, it will be great encouragement for Microsoft. But he is not coming back to it. Mr. Gates says he is now working full time for the Foundation. He is working with Microsoft as part time worker. I have two careers. He is lucky that both the jobs proved to be wonderful for him. I loved Microsoft. It prepared me for the task, which presently I am performing. I have seen a revolution in PC and Internet. I witness decrease in death rate. Now I work on it for long hours and try to learn more on these things. I get delight from my work. He reiterates that the Foundation is a universal campaign. The governments will have to take part in it to play its important role. If we compare the sources of the Foundation they are lesser to cope with the problems. But I feel it good luck as much of the sources of the world are being used to make the world a worth living place. Death among the children less than five years in 1990 was 12 millions. Today this calculation is 7 million or 19 thousands a day. According to the U.N.O the causes of death are pneumonia (18%), complication of premature birth (4%), diarrhoea (11%), and complication during labor pain (9%) and by Malaria 7%. You have to do just this, to give two or three drops of vaccine to 90% children. The scourge of Polio will cease to expand and the number of reported cases will drop to zero. When we started working on it the number of paralyzed children was 4 Lac. Now the number of cases throughout the year is one thousand. The importance of the eradication of Polio will enable us to use our sources against Malaria and Measles. For Mr. Bill Gates, Polio is a phenomenon of nature. Eradication of this disease will be tremendous news. It will encourage the country to render more of its efforts. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will spend 1.8 million dollars for this purpose. It is 1/3 of the universal efforts. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gates are demonstrating astounding generosity and also convincing others that generosity on large scale is the only course to go further. Warren Buffet---a shrewd investor has donated 17.5 million dollars through Gates’ Foundation. Bill and Melinda Gates’ children would never come to know what poverty was. Although they will never own billions, yet they will inherit one hundred million or more after the deeds of ample charities from their fortunate parents. Mr. Gates explains that more than 95% of their wealth goes to the foundation which will spend the entire sum within 20 years. Neither of them will exist by that time. When he was questioned whether all this was for the new found faith? He responded it was not an expression of some certain religion. It is about human prestige and equality. It is the golden principle that all lives have equal worth. We should treat other in a way by which we are expected to be treated. Second Interview A.T: Having joined Peace Mission how were you helped by Pak. Army experience? S. Chishti: My first posting was in Somalia. I was appointed as security coordinator. Experience of Pak Army proved an asset there. I believe Pak Army is such a training camp as has made positive and organized influence on every walks of my life. These influences have helped me in every phase. I have been a part of personal staff of Secretary General. For that I availed myself of the opportunity to represent his International Inspection Team. It will be an undeniable fact that whatever I am today is due to the blessing of God, my parents and Pak Army. I had joined army under an acute impulsive drive. Pakistan had won the war in 1965. Every student and young man aspired to join army in those days and the work done with enthusiasm leaves positive impact on ones personality and life. In my view the institution of Pak Army is a well organized institution as compared to the others and the services for the survival of the nation rendered by this institution are highly laudable. A.T: How much role does the host country play in better performance of the service of the U.N.O.? S. Chishti: U.N.O. never starts any program without consent and appreciation of the host country. Hence success or failure of any program depends mostly on the host country. In order to get better coordination for a programme or a mission we need strong integration between local and international civil staff, civil police and army commentators. These are the all factors which work harmoniously and take any programme of U.N.O. to success. U.N.O. has sources and professional experience but it relies on the government and the ministries of the host country that they should pave the way and create the congenial atmosphere to carry out U.N.O. programs. A.T: what are the other problems that U.N.O encounters? S. Chishti: Considerable cooperation does not exist between National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan. The little cooperation that exists almost vanishes, by the time, it reaches the lower levels. On the contrary obstacle are thrown in its way. Keeping in view the demands of the present era U.N.O has to ensure safety and security prior to launching of their program. Under the prevailing circumstances and difficult situations services of U.N.O have been greatly confined. If the institutions of U.N.O do not receive encouraging answer from the ministries and powerful links are not established with them, U.N.O sets on working within its particular sphere. A.T: what is the importance of Pakistan in U.N.O? S. Chishti: Pakistan’s voice is considered a significance voice of the Muslim world in U.N.O. Pakistan, being an atomic power, has played an active role in General Assembly and Security Council. Pakistan is a country which has been very important geographically in the whole region. Therefore the world community takes the voice of Pakistan very seriously. A.T: Does U.N.O face some financial constraints? S. Chishti: Yes somewhere this situation exists where U.N.O faces lack of funds. Here, I will cite example of USAID’s vast and long term program with ample financial assistance which are carried out throughout the world and particularly in Pakistan. U.N.O is not doing like that. USAID, with the collaboration of local and foreign institutions, is providing service in many departments at a time. They are creating soft corner in the hearts of masses by dint of their sources and by the use of their media. On the other hand U.N.O. has to work within limited sources. Again, there remains meager chance to use media. U.N.O. also confronts lack of sources. Even they cannot prolong their program beyond 90 days and appeals for more funds are made on the various websites of all the institutions of U.N.O. A.T: How much helpful atmosphere lies in Pakistan in reference to U.N.O. programs? S. Chishti: U.N.O. desires Pakistan to be a strong country and it is present in Pakistan with all of its institutions but as I have already said that participation of the host country is essential. In fact there are serious reservations about U.N.O. programs which are being carried out in far flung areas of Pakistan. It is believed their presence in these areas is for their own vested interests and not for our betterment. U.N.O. depends on the host country for any of its program. It needs their active role, consent and appreciation. It even, cannot usually start a program with the cooperation of private institutions, keeping the government in abeyance. Therefore if only the government pays heed to it then it can reach out its problems not only with the help of U.N.O. but also use capacities and services of any other international institutions in this regard. Because these are the institutions which are working throughout the world and their experience and sources are many fold as compared to the country sources. A.T: What role U.N.O. is playing to winning over the heart of Pakistanis despite government’s non-seriousness? S. Chishti: This is very important question. Despite governments non seriousness U.N.O. is providing its services with determination in remote areas of Pakistan. The services provided by UNDP, FAO, UNHCR, WFP and UNICEF are worth mentioning. Apart from its managements U.N.O. also gets services of its local institutions and people in order to carry out its programs more effectively. U.N.O. programs include education, health and hygiene, pure drinking water, vaccine against several diseases of children, rescue and rehabilitation at the time of natural disaster and many more other programs. Some of them are short term and some of them are long term programs. Another important thing is that in some areas of Pakistan negative propaganda against U.N. programs is at work. That is why U.N.O. faces confrontation to maintain its integrity. A.T: Having international vision do you see the solution of the problems of Pakistan? S. Chishti: My basic field is safety and security and I have rendered services in Congo, Angola, Somalia, Ethiopia and countries of Western Sahara adversely affected countries of the world and have been remained busy in carrying out U.N. programs in more than 50 countries. I have seen such countries as are facing more dire problems than Pakistan. Today we are witnessing the most aggravated situation of Pakistan but we can overcome by taking far-reaching steps. There are only few people who are hampering Pakistan to traverse the road of progress. If we curb them with iron hand there is no doubt that we will control our crises. Not only can we use U.N.O. for removal of our problems we can also use it for our development. Countries like China and India are benefited by U.N.O. for their programs. We also need to learn from them. A.T: what links prevail between Pakistani media and United Nation Organization? S. Chishti: There is no representative of Pakistani Media in U.N.O. saving one from ‘Daily Dawn’ where as it is very essential for a country like Pakistan that we should have a platform to raise our voice internationally. There can be none such organized and active platform as that of U.N.O. But Pakistani media cannot assess its significance. On the other hand there is a schism between Pakistani media and U.N.O. even inside Pakistan. This gulf emerges in the houses of government when they and the representatives of U.N.O. program observe that they are not achieving the expected results. Consequentially U.N.O. limits its programs. A.T: How do you see bringing out of Alamgir Times in term of U.N.O. working? S. Chishti: I see it is a good act. The best of it is that it focuses on one aspect. I am sure the magazine will serve Pakistan at national and international levels in the long run and will become her voice by representing welfare services of Pakistan. To advance any society on right direction it is requisite to convey positive voices to the masses and relevant circles. This is the task which Alamgir Times is performing so that we may realize the dream of glorious future. I myself ensure Alamgir Times for my every cooperation. I shall make efforts to convey its voice to U.N.O. I, in my personal capacity, am working profoundly on the establishment of a foundation whose slogan is elimination of poverty, hunger and unemployment. We can only make it possible when every citizen of our country advances with determination and enthusiasm to perform to show something to his country. Best regards, Syed Chishti.
