First Word: Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” Lk. 23: 34 Pater, dimitte illis, quia nesciunt, quid faciunt It is beautiful to point out that the first word spoken by Jesus on Calvary was about forgiveness. In the midst of his excruciating suffering, the heart of Jesus was focused on others rather than himself. Instead of cursing them, He asked the Father to forgive them. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. And here we see the nature of Christs love—unconditional and divine. Therefore, to be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because Christ in His ultimate sacrifice upon the Cross in order to redeem us, has also forgiven the inexcusable.
