First and foremost, Id like to thank Nathan and Jason at the 53rd St jet ski rental. They let me and CJ here share their umbrella to cool off and have great conversation. They also helped me get to know CJs temperament a little better. Sadly, the temperature today didnt allow CJ and I to venture very far, so we just did short spurt running. Before anyone gets alarmed, we found plenty of shade, drank lots of water (I carried 3 liters), and I doused her with water often. CJ is a border collie/cocker spaniel mix who will require an owner who is patient with a timid animal. When I picked her up from the shelter, she was extremely cautious around everyone. However, once she sniffed the hand of various people, she warmed up to them fairly quickly. I believe shes a little more comfortable around females, but she had no problem with Nathan and Jason. Just between you and me though...I think she was just buttering them up to use their shade. CJ gets ambitious around other dogs and wags her tail vigorously trying to play. She growled at a cat but when I walked her past multiple kittens, she was curious but not malicious. In fact, on the second cat visit...She was afraid of them. As far as exercise, she runs very well. She did much better on the return trip after a long cool down. Shes no speed demon, but runners who can average a 12-15 minute mile would find her perfect. Sadly, she HATES the water. I had to almost throw her in to cool her off, and while she was in the water, she tried desperately to pull away. She misled me because she wanted to jump off of seawall seemingly to get to the water...like border collies do, but I guess she just wanted to nestle in the sand...which she loved! CJ will need time to get used to being handled by strangers, but I can see an enthusiasm in her to just let loose and be a ball of energy and friendliness. I think shed do well in a multiple dog household. Other dogs would make her a lot more extroverted and less timid and reserved. Shes an adorable pup who is fully grown (about 1 year old)...so that puppy cuteness isnt going anywhere anytime soon. Special request from the guy who runs with dogs: if you drop by the Galveston Island Humane Society looking for a dog, then ask to pet her even if you dont want her per se. The interaction with as many people as possible would help with her confidence. Thanks to all. -Grab a dog, and jog!
