First day of the Justice Teaching Institute went great. The other twenty-four teachers are like-minded, the kind of people who give up their spring break for professional development in civic education (i.e. my kind of people!) We are overseen by several judges and mentor teachers, including former FL Supreme Court Chief Justice (and current Justice) R. Fred Lewis. He started this and a connected series of programs which bring 4,000 FL teachers and judges to public schools for civic education. In the opening he even shouted me out by name for my theory on teaching social studies content in literacy which I mentioned in my introduction. Its refreshing to see someone with authority take education and educators seriously, and actually mean it. There is a special weight when people with power use it for the right things and for kids - not to score political points by saying for kids and then harming them but actually doing it. Throughout the week well be taught by every member of the Supreme Court in different issues and be able to bring that back to our schools. I am home. Feeling blessed.
