First of all, not every concert pianist is boring... Its wrong to generalize and title the article in such a way... Yes the trend to perform flawlessly and with perfection made some, or perhaps I should say vast majority of modern concert pianists a little boring... Sometimes it looks like a Formula One race as pianists perform difficult compositions in piano literature as faster or as cleaner possible with that forgetting to express their own individual interpretation ideas... Tru musician should try to express his or her personal ideas tru thoroughly understanding composers notations and then perform as spontaneously as possible... following all of composers wishes and not worring to much to be perfect... That was the spirit of great pianists like Anton and Nicoly Rubinstein, Joseph Hoffman, Alexander Scriabin, Sergai Rachmaninov, Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Emil Gillels, Svitoslav Richter to name a few... There are young pianists who know and follow this principals of piano performance and we should wish that teachers will educate and explore this with their students as early as possible...
