First to lose elections by one vote In the history of American democracy of 16,577 national elections from 1898, they have found that only ones electoral fate had been decided by a single vote. It was in the 1910 election in New Yorks 36th Congressional District a Democrat who polled 20,685 votes to the Republican candidates 20,684 was declared elected by one vote. So far only two Indian politicians know the importance and value of single vote than anybody else in the country. First to lose elections by one vote in India In India this one vote victories became a reality with the advent of electronic voting machines where there is no scope for human intervention and error of judgment in deciding the votes. The first candidate in India to lose the elections by one vote . A R Krishnamurthy who lost against R Dhruvanarayan in Santhemarahalli(Sc) constituency in the 2004 assembly elections. While Krishnamurthy contesting on JDS ticket polled 40751 against Dhruvanarayans 40752 votes . He is none other than the son of veteran politician and former governor of Kerala late B Rachiahs son. Surprisingly, for Krishnamurthy whose driver when wanted time to vote was prevented by none other than Krishmamurthy himself. This negligent attitude cost him dearly in politics making him to repent for life. Today Krishnamurthy turns philosophical when asked to comment on the incident. “In my life I never wish even my bitter enemy to lose an election in this fashion The second person to lose the elections by one vote After this it was C P Joshi ; in 2008 elections then Rajasthan state Congress chief C P Joshi who lost the election in Nathdwara constituency by a single vote, defeated by BJP rival Kalyan Singh Chouhan. C P Joshi not only missed the chance to become an MLA but also lost his chance to become chief minister as he was aspiring for the chief ministers post and was the main contender for the post. Similar was the case with C P Joshi, his mother, wife, and driver reportedly didnt turn up to vote on the polling day.
