First trip....(from my Journal)... Southern trip 10/3 to 10/12 ( This is the first actual trip in the Travel Trailer. We stopped in the 370 campground in St Peters when we first got it. Then went to the farm for a 3 days. Then to a KOA in Eureka MO with the Shamels. ) Hokey, so, .. Left on 10/3 in the afternoon after J9s work. Approximately 3 pm. Headed south to Hayti/Portageville KOA . Found the camp backed up to a cotton field. Then headed south on I55 on the way to Milton FL to meet up with Joe Harter at the “Blackwater Pirate Fest/party”. However, tropical storm Karen developed in the Gulf so we diverted west. We traveled down highway 61 in MS, called “the Blues Highway”. Stopped at a visitors center and learned of the history of Highway 61. Many blues musicians traveled this highway and wrote songs about the highway. At the visitors center were many guitars that some of those blues singers owned and some signed. Names like Muddy Waters, Johnny Lee Hooker, Ike Turner and others. Very cool. Then we stopped in Vicksburg MS and stayed at the Ameristar RV resort Friday and Saturday nights. We visited “Catfish Row” , while we walked it turned out that there was a festival of some sort going on downtown Vicksburg. Some vendors and a classic tractor show. There were about 5 tractors. Haha. It was pretty cool. Visited a place called “the Tomato Place” ...which was a pretty neat roadside stand. Fresh vegetables and grape flavored apples. Strange tasting, not bad, actually had some grape flavor. I got stung by a bee while in Vicksburg. My hand swelled for 2 days we got some benedril and it started to diminish on the 3rd day. Sunday morning we headed south and took the Natchez Parkway. It was still open even though the National Parks were closed due to the partial government shutdown. Very nice ride, no bill boards or structures. Just like driving a nice paved road though the woods. At Natchez MS we crossed over the Mississippi into Louisiana and rode the LA15 along the western edge of the Mississippi. Lots of cotton fields in various stages of growth and a bunch of sugar cane fields. Got to watch some crop dusters along the route as well Pretty neat. Stopped to have lunch with Melanie and Eric Jerlin in Church Point LA. Met Mels father, very much the cajun... could barely understand him. Eric cut some fresh bananas from the tree in his back yard. Very nice. Then continued on to Houston TX where we stayed till Wednesday morning. We stayed in the Houston East RV park in Baytown TX. Very nice. Sunday night Jeannine and I went to Bayou City Wings , a pretty cool bar in Baytown. Monday night went to dinner at Papadeauxs with Jeannines colleague Randall and his wife. They live in north Houston so we went there to meet them. Tuesday I went to Kemah TX to check out the tourist stuff while Jeannine worked. Wednesday we headed back to Church Point LA to hook up with Mel and Eric again as well as Theresa and Joe Harter and Joes sister Lorna. It got very drunk that night. Lots of laughs. Thursday we barbecued and visited. We parked the trailer in Erics driveway till Friday morning. Friday, 10/11/13, happy anniversary to us...#27. We hit the road and drove all the way to Sikeston MO. Just cruised I55 all day. Nice ride, pretty uneventful drive. Sunday we headed back to St Louis. Great trip. Ill get some pics up in a short while.
