First year in a while we didnt turn off the lights for Earth Hour. Honestly, Im over it. Of course, I understand the intent is to highlight climate change and act as a conversation piece. But, I find that conversation increasingly hollow and unproductive. Were on the verge of a climate disaster, possibly within my daughters lifetime. Lets rename Earth Day in Canada and call it Shut Down Tar Sands Day and encourage folks to participate in direct actions against our energy infrastructure. Until the urgency and tone shifts from our current paradigm to a justice and rights framework, Earth Day is just a day for a bunch of middle class environmentalists who arent interested in a reorganization of society - which is what is needed to fight climate change.
