Firstly , this is not intended to be a negative post....but more pointing out an opportunity to bring life back into our streets . I think our Brisbane City Council street scapes need a revamp. Recently , while visiting out of town I observed some delightful street scapes that included many non-native species .None of them were self seeding into native bushland or inhibiting wildlife in any way. They were simply thriving and looking a treat while bringing colour, texture and most of all ,visual interest for every passer-by. Maybe our town planners feel that they MUST plant only native species to appease those purists that feel only native plants are the answer in regards to smart water use or environmental impact . Well I think its boring and left unattended ( as most are) look messy and very unappealing to the senses. Its little wonder many people are not encouraged to brighten up their own front yards with colourful plants ....there is no inspiration. Its high time that they take another look at the values of colourful street scaping as there are so many beautiful species of plants that can lift our spirits and make our city and suburbs a more liveable place. Many other councils can do it , why cant Brisbane ? Its one sure way of ensuring some good employment and training opportunities for any member of the community to gain valuable skills while making something beautiful along the way.
