Fishermen Miss Stroke Coverage Bhubaneswar : 8/October/2013 Fishermen, who are at high risk of Sun Stroke during the Summer, are not covered for Heat-related illness under the Insurance Coverage. So, Sanjeeb Kumar Mishra, Secretary Fisheries and Animal Resources Development taking up the cause, strongly felt that the fishermen losing their lives due to Sun Stroke needed to be supported by the Insurance Agencies liberally. Mr.Mishra, a pro-poor Mandarin was speaking here today at the workshop on Social Security for Fishermen organized by the National Federation of Fishermen’s Cooperatives Limited (FISHCOPFED). The workshop was aimed at creating awareness among the departmental officials as well as the fishermen about insurance coverage of the family members of the fishermen, apart from strengthening and empowering the Fisheries Cooperatives so as to ensure their security through insurance scheme. While the fishermen community is harping for Insurance Coverage for Sun Stroke, various Insurance companies are reluctant as those type of illness are not covered under Insurance Coverage. But Mr.Mishra taking up the cause of the hapless fishermen said they are needed to be provided Ex-Gratia for such a casualty, which the participants in the Workshop supported. Mr.Mishra said since fishermen’s profession is highly risky and accident prone, they need social and financial security, he added. “Insurance alone is not enough; there is need to focus on scientific fishing and model marketing to strengthen the movement,” he added. He spoke about Maschya Jivi Basa Gruha Yojona, a scheme of the State Government for poor fishermen, which is in the pipeline. Under the scheme, a house worth Rs.90,000 will be provided to the poor fishermen. The State Government will contribute Rs 75,000 while Rs 15,000 will be borne by the beneficiary, Mr. Mishra informed. On the occasion, he gave away cheques of Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIC) to the next kin of 12 deceased fishermen. Speaking on the occasion, Bimal Kumar Mishra, MD FISHCOFED said, “Fishermen community constitutes 1.5 crore of the total population of the country. Cooperatives should be strengthened in the fishery sector.” P Krishna Mohan, Director of Fisheries, SK Behera, Regional Manager, New India Assurance Company spoke on the occasion. District Fisheries Officers, Fisheries Cooperative Inspectors of different districts, officials of State Fisheries and Presidents and Secretaries of Fisheries Cooperatives of the State were present.
