Fit For The Benefits Luke 12:33 (New Living Translation) “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Luke 14:26 (New Living Translation) “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. Matthew 16:25 (New Living Translation) If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. It may appear in these scriptures that we have to give up so much to be a Christian. Like we have to pay a tremendous cost up front for the reward of eternal life later. We’ve all heard people say they don’t want to live for God now because they don’t want to have to give up the things they are doing. Of course in reality God only wants us to give up the things that are detrimental to us, not for His sake, but for our own sake. Luke 18:29-30 (New Living Translation) “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.” We don’t live for God just to go to Heaven. We have the benefits of God’s helping hand. We have His peace and joy, His strength and courage to see us through this wicked and unruly world. We have the benefits of a faith and a hope the world can’t give us. 1 Timothy 4:8 (New Living Translation) Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and then next. I have never been one to go to the gym and work out. I find it so boring and when I do try, I dread going. We can’t let our spiritual exercise become that kind of drudgery. We have to stay fit for the benefits, for now and forever.
