Five family members associated with the for-profit school Micropower Career Institute (MCI) and the Institute for Health Education (IHE), have been charged by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services with fraud. They routinely charged immigrant students $10,000 each year for tuition -- but students were not all attending class full time, or benefiting from the financial aid the school was reportedly giving. Through their for-profit schools, the defendants defrauded the government and exploited their students. For their personal financial gain, the defendants allegedly made false certifications about the schools compliance. --Preet Bharara, Manhattan federal prosecutor Students F-1 visas may be terminated; each family member may face 5 to 20 years in prison.
