Five love lessons from ‘English Only, Please!’ 1/06/2015 9:00 AM by: Maureen Marie Belmonte Push This ABS CBN Entertainment News Site Derek Ramsay and Jennylyn Mercado’s first foray into rom-com, English Only, Please!, has got netizens buzzing and moviegoers lining up. Not only because the film has earned them the top acting awards in the recently-concluded 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival, but mostly because of its overall light feel. While many thought that the plot of two broken hearts finding love in each other’s arms is fairly run-of-the-mill, people continue to gush about Derek and Jennylyn’s surprising chemistry as well as the film’s catchy, dictionary-like editing. But apart from the comic and kilig moments, the film was essentially brimming with love lessons from Tere (Jennylyn) and Julian’s (Derek) experiences. With that, Push.ph lists down the top five lessons from English Only, Please! 1. Go big or go home This could essentially be Tere’s mantra as she plays the “ever-generous” girlfriend o her demanding unofficial boyfriend Rico played by Kean Cipriano. Of course, this doesn’t only apply to giving material objects but also to showing affection, which is what Tere does—albeit foolishly—in the form of all her gifts for Rico. Favorite line: “Itodo mo na…” This was what Tere advised Julian during one of their tutoring sessions wherein she taught him how to say “Hoy” with a passion. 2. Keep your eyes open for the red flags They say love is blind but it doesn’t have to be, especially if red flags are waving right in front of you. Among the red flags that everyone should watch out for, as experienced by Tere, are the following: if a guy only wants intimacy sans the commitment and if he has an endless list of demands for you to fulfill just so you can “prove” your love for him. Favorite line: “Eh, ako pa ba?” This was what Tere told Rico after she failed to give him a 13-inch laptop which led to his questioning of her love for him. 3. Keep your brutally honest friend close Inasmuch as we want to be rational with our actions whenever we are in love, our emotions often get the better of us and such is what often happens to Tere. Thankfully though, she has her candid and blunt best friend Mallows played by Kai Cortez who helps her get things in the right perspective every single time. Favorite line: “Talo mo pa ang bakla eh, kulang na lang magbigay ka ng motor!” This was what Mallows told Tere when she saw her toting a laptop for Rico. 4. Never trust a guy that only wants to spend time with you inside a hotel room Need we say more? Cementing the unlikeable personality of Rico was the fact that he only meets with Tere inside the hotel room with him unabashedly charging the room’s bill to her every single time. A guy that can only spend time with you inside a hotel room or doesn’t even introduce you to his family or friends is up to no good. Again, it’s not love if he’s only after physical intimacy and nothing else. Favorite line: “Kumo-quota ka na talaga sa pagkatanga sa pag-ibig ah!” This was what Mallows told Tere when she confronted her about settling for Rico. 5. Aside from time, another heart can also mend a broken heart As in real life, a huge factor that makes a person move on is when they find someone new. Such was what happened to Julian, who, after being devastated by his ex-girlfriend Megan’s (Isabel Oli) departure found love in the person of Tere who helped him see through his anger and eventually take a chance at love again. Favorite line: Ngayon lang ako nagmahal nang ganito, ngayon lang. A portion of Tere’s monologue pertaining about Julian.
