Five years ago, I was told not to teach Night in my 8th grade class because it was considered a high school text. Two years ago I had to defend it as appropriate for 8th grade while people argued that the lexile meant it was too low for middle school according to the Common Core. I am of the school of thought that the role of literature at any grade level is to evoke critical thinking and provide students with a lens through which they can examine their world. Were I teaching 8th grade again this year, I wouldnt hesitate to use Night.
