Five years ago, a powerful 8.1 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean caused a tsunami that swept ashore on American Samoa. Coastal villages were destroyed, affecting thousands of residents. In the days following, dozens of American Red Cross volunteers from the U.S., including 15 from Hawaii, were deployed. They went village to village distributing relief supplies to the approximately 2,000 families affected. Among them was Alofa Ofagalilo, a Hawaii Red Cross worker who lost members of her family during the tsunami.
