Five years ago today, I had been back from Iraq for about 2 weeks, most of my belongings were spread in different storage units across 4 different states. What I did have was all that I could fit in my truck (after all of my military gear had been loaded) and I was on my way to my eleventh military installation in a 4 year period. (The longest I’d spent at any of them was a year to the day.) It would be another 3 months before I would be able to live in the same city as my fiancé and 6 months before I would get my belongings back. At least another year before I received all the back pay I was due from the Army. This Veteran’s Day, it’s important to remember the sacrifices our service members make; the time away from family, the stress of multiple moves, the patience to deal with bureaucracy, etc. But more importantly, we need to remember our loved ones that not only waited patiently for our return, but I’m sure had many sleepless nights wondering where we were and what we were doing (and most of all if we were safe). Thank you to those that supported my dreams and allowed me to serve our country in a way that felt honorable. Without that support, our veterans’ service would be impossible. And thank you to the veterans that I had the privilege of serving with.
