Five years back, when I came to this city, it appeared to be a bleak landscape: costly, rough, and workaholic. For a Bengali who loved spending his days daydreaming that Delhi would be the ideal spot (without knowing what ideal he was talking of) for him, it turned out to be demanding, and damaging (!). ... There are smells that connect you to your past. Today, as the train crossed the Tilak Bridge, a smell -- of the dazzling sun and scorched soil -- greeted me -- as it had, in 2009. I reserved an auto for Govindpuri and looked at the same, old city, anew. A city of contradictions : from Suchayans place, I face a bleak landscape of the slum-dwellers. Yet I know, there is C.R.Park on the other side of the road; and a half-an-hour auto-ride would take me to Hailey Road and Copernicus Marg. There is life! Why, these people are alive! May be not in the way we, the rooted Kolkatans are. But yes, they live. I do not envy them. .... Fancies, curled round these images, form another Delhi for me. Harsh, tough, yet considerate enough to keep me back! A fool that I had been ...
