Flash Flood in USA on Tuesday, 10 September, 2013 at 03:32 (03:32 AM) UTC. Forecasters are predicting additional downpour tonight following a soggy day in the Valley that triggered some highway closures, flooded yards and roads, and contributed to dozens of car crashes. The National Weather Service has issued a significant weather advisory for central Maricopa County. The advisory includes a possibility for short bursts of storm activity in metro Phoenix that includes strong winds and heavy rain. Meteorologist Austin Jameson said there is a strong chance the storm will again cause flash-flood conditions and severe thunderstorms throughout the Valley. A similar deluge is predicted for Tuesday morning. Remnants of a tropical storm that hit parts of Mexico and southern California drenched many parts of the Valley on Monday, striking hardest in the East Valley. More than 2 inches of rain pelted Ahwatukee; some Mesa and Queen Creek neighborhoods received up to 1 and 1/2 inches. More than 20 minor accidents were reported on the U.S. 60 during the downpour. Rainfall impeded traffic in other parts of the Valley, as well: A lake-sized body of water on Greenway Road at the Interstate 17 underpass in Phoenix was impassable to motorists in the evening rush hour. In Glendale, police officers urged motorists to avoid avoid the areas between Thunderbird and Bell and 51st and 67th avenues. Intermittent flooding there contributed to several car crashes. Running water in Scottsdale shut down Carefree Highway between 60th Street and Scottsdale Road. At least 1,000 homes went without power in parts of Glendale and Peoria. Crews were able to restore service to most customers by early evening. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RSOE
