#FlashBackFriday presented by the Bean Soup Archives 1990 Tri-State 15 & Under Soccer Champions Last Monday morning, the 15 and Under Soccer team set out to Moosilauke for the annual Tri-State Soccer Tournament. Pemi met Winaukee in the first round at 10:00 a.m. It was anticipated as being one of the more difficult matches of the day for Pemi, since Winaukee was the defending champion. We were anxious to play our first game of the season and see how our team had progressed in the limited practice time during the first week. The first Pemi goal in the Winaukee game resulted from a cross from King Lee to Ethan Schafer. Ethan scored again in the second half of the game after receiving a crossed ball from Danny Kusik. The Pemi defensive line utilized the off-sides trap as a means of containing the constant pressure posed by Winaukee. Hustle by Danny Kusik, Charlie Kovas and Adam Spragg kept the opposing offensive players extremely frustrated and hungry for the ball. Both Tim Apter and Zach See played as keepers during the game, and they showed that they were not intimidated by the aggressive play of Winaukee. The veteran defensive players for Pemi, Bridger McGaw and Andy Thompson, helped shut down the attacking Winaukee strikers. At the same time Pemis offense continued to make beautiful runs to the Winaukee goal. Notable contributors to the Pemi offensive attack were King Lee, Gordon Bainbridge, Ethan Schafer, Evan Singer, Sebastien Iselin, David Battis, Ryan McCue, Evans Longacre and David McHugh. In the semi-finals round, Pemi met Moosilauke. Momentum was hard to find after such an intense first round match, until Ethan Schafer found an open shot at the five minute mark. The shot was blocked but quickly redirected by King Lee who easily slid the ball past the goalie for a 1-0 lead. Another five minutes was all it took for Ethan Schafer to notch a 2-0 lead. Dan Kusik and Gordon Bainbridge also found the back of the net to give Pemi a 4-0 lead at halftime. Two more Pemi goals finished off the scoring in the second half for a decisive 6-0 victory for Pemi. Pemi moved into the finals to face a very talented and aggressive Kingswood squad. King Lee and Ethan Schafer once again combined at the five minute mark to boot in Pemis first tally. The Pemi bench erupted into a cheering frenzy! The momentum quickly swayed towards Lower Baker. Ten minutes later, King Lee and Ryan McCue combined for another exciting Pemi tally. Refusing to give in, Kingswood turned the tide with two excellent goals of their own, creating a 2-2 tie. The Pemi defense was then forced to kick in, led by the energetic Danny Kusik, Adam Spragg, Charlie Kovas, Andy Thompson and the powerful bookends, Herrmann and Flick. A crucial third goal was marked again by King Lee from a chip by Adam Spragg over the defensive wall of Kingswood. Again Kingswood managed to come back by popping in their own third goal. Sparked by the powerful catalyst, the bench, Pemis attack was able to rally back for a fourth and game-winning goal by David Spragg. The Pemi 15 and Under soccer team would soon be crowned as the Tri-State Champs. The coaches would like to thank everyone who participated in the tournament and for letting us experience one of the most exciting soccer matches played at Pemi. We would also like to thank Chris Toomey, Charlie Speth, Jamal Pettiford- Jones, Ben Ripple, David Dietche, Ian Barkin, Tim Billo, Ben Kennedy, Mike Sundue, Tim Richter, Alex Lynch and Christian Haas for their hard work and effort on the field. We can now look forward to the grueling match against TECUMSEH!!! —Coaches Rob Johnson, Pete Cowles, Reilly McCue
