#FlingbackFriday. So this weeks plunder of my back catalogue was a no brainer. 19 years ago I was asked to remix the mighty Frankie Knuckles for Virgin Records. I didnt think twice, I took the job and remixed my arse off. After delivering it I heard, via Virgins A&R, that Frankie had asked them to pass a message on to me saying just how much he was blown away by the remix. In turn, I was blown away by that! I had never met him but knowing that somebody as influential on me as he was had passed on those words, meant the World to me. Years later, I was DJing in New York, I felt a tap on my shoulder, turned around and there he was! Hed come down specifically to see me, to thank me in person for the remix! I soon learned that this is exactly the kinda guy he was. A real gent! Theres another thing I want to say about this record. It opens with a looped vocal singing And since then Ive been blessed. When I did it I wasnt really thinking about what it was saying, I was just homing in on the melody. As it turned out, this remix took my career to the next level. I went from making underground club tracks to remixing major artists pretty much overnight. In the early 2000s I was having a drink with Brian Tappert, we were playing records and just chatting rubbish. I cant remember how it happened but somehow I ended up playing Walkin and Brian looked at me as soon as it started and said... Listen to the lyrics! And since then Ive been blessed..... From that moment forward this record has held a very significant part in my heart. With the events of this week, the lyrics are even more poignant now. Im not sure that Ill ever listen to it without shedding a tear again. Love you Frankie x
