Flood leads to mayhem across Kashmir; death toll reaches six, rains refuse to relent Educational institutions closed upto Sunday, Haj flights cancelled for 3 days Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 4: The flood situation in Kashmir valley turned grim today as more areas in Central, South and North Kashmir got inundated due to the rainfall that has been going on in the Kashmir valley since Tuesday morning. Officials said that with four more deaths the death toll in the flood related incidents has gone up to six in Kashmir. Officials told Early Times that two deaths each have been recorded in Anantnag, Budgam and Baramulla districts. The impact of flood is more in Central and South Kashmir as compared to North Kashmir. Panic gripped the patients and their attendants at the Bone and Joints Hospital in Barzulla here as the flood water entered the premises of the hospital on Wednesday evening. The Doodh Ganga stream that passes by the side of the hospital developed a breach in the embankment and following this the water entered the premises of the hospital. In no time there was knee deep water in the compound of the hospital with panic written largely on the faces of the patients. The attendants of the patients and the locals geared up and shifted the patients to safer places. The message was flashed to the hospital administration that also took the corrective measures of shifting the patients. Early in the day today the patients in the ground floor were shifted to the first floor. Residents of the nearby Old Barzulla, Old Chanapora and Natipora localities were also panic stricken as the water entered their residential premises. The residents of these areas swung into action and started the relief measures. They informed the district administration who also reached the spot and the rescue operations got a fillip. Water also entered the premises of Jhelum Valley Medical College hospital in the Bemina area and this caused panic among the people there. The patients at this hospitals ground floor were also shifted to the first floor. The Haj House which is located nearby was also submerged. This forced the authorities to cancel the Haj flights for September 5, 6 and 7. Residents of Hamdaniya colony located in the Bemina area of summer capital got stuck in the flood waters as there was no let up in the incessant rains. Police, army and civil administration started the rescue operations and the civilians were rescued. Boats were pressed into service for evacuation of civilians and personnel of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) also chipped in during the rescue operation. In areas like Mehjoor Nagar, Rambagh and Padshahi Bagh water entered the premises of the houses located there. In most of the cases the inhabitants shifted to the first floor after the water entered the ground floor of their houses. Some of them shifted their belongings to relatives as they fear that the situation may worsen in the coming days. In some of the areas in downtown Srinagar people living near the river Jhelum have been shifted to safer places. The Doodh Ganga stream which flows through Chadoora town of Budgam in Central Kashmir has created havoc in the area as many villages located along it have been submersed due to incredible rise of water. Villages like Dangarpora, Wathoora and Banhar have been submerged in water as the Doodh Ganga canal is flowing above the danger mark. The nearby villages have also been affected as water has entered into the houses. People have started shifting to safer places. In South Kashmirs Anantnag and Kulgam districts the flood situation worsened after two dozen villages and localities including major areas of Anantnag town submerged. Two persons identified as Jameel Gorsi S/o Gulam Gorsi , aged 22 yrs resident of Ichoo-Gadole, Kokernag and Jana Begum w/o Haleem Khari R/o Gadveil, Kokernag lost their lives due to floods in the area. Reports said that floods washed away the Gadool Bridge. As a result of this villages like Halpora, Chartanzi, Adigam, Irkumoo, Nagam, Kandiwara, Soaf, Hiller, Khalhar, Arhama, Guihard, Pooroo and Hayatpora got submerged with water. The floods have also damaged agriculture land in the area. Reports said that areas like Nai-Basti Anantnag, Sepan, Danter, Akhran and Khanabal also submerged today due to incessant rainfall. However, the water level in river Lidder decreased due to snowfall in upper reaches of Pahalgam. Seven nomad families were rescued in Palpora area of Hakura Badezgam. Seven persons trapped in the Nowpora locality of Kulgam district were also rescued. Late night reports said that a flood alert was sounded in Baramulla district as River Jhelum was flowing five feet above the danger mark. Reports said that 19 villages have been inundated in North Kashmir districts of Baramulla and Bandipora. Property worth crores has been damaged and loss has also been caused to other properties in the twin districts. Reports said that incessant rains since Tuesday have raised the water level in major streams and rivers, including Checki Ferozpora, Checki Terran, Ratnipora, Augmuna, Hardaboora, Tarham, Pinjora, Agrikalan, Naripora, Khaipora, Dangerpora, Mahrajpora, Hangerpora and Tantraypora are worst hit areas in Gulmarag constituency. Tarzoo, Achabal, Krankshiwoun, Doubghaw and other areas of Sopore town are completely inundated by floods from last 24 hours. Baramulla recorded 52 mm rainfall in the corresponding period while Kupwara in north Kashmir received 121.5 mm rainfall. At the same time landslides and stone shooting incidents took place in many areas. Due to continuous rainfall, Athwatoo, Arin, Matrigam and Madhumati Nallahs are flowing above the danger mark with a flood-like situation persisting in the North Kashmirs Bandipora district. The vital Kaloosa and Safapora bridges connecting Bandipora with Baramulla and Kupwara districts was shut for vehicular traffic after it got damaged. Sonawari, Hajin, Shahgund, Sumbal, Madvan, Naidkhai and other adjoining areas have been inundated as the water in these areas has crossed the danger mark. In the Kupwara district, five houses suffered damages in Mawar while as two houses were damaged in the Langate area. In the meantime, the divisional administration of Kashmir has announced that schools and colleges would remain closed upto September 7. The authorities have ordered for the closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway and Srinagar-Leh highway on September 5. The authorities have ordered for the cancellation of Police Public Mela scheduled to be held on September 7. At the same time the water continues to flow above the danger mark at Sangam-Bijbehara in Anantnag and Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar. The water level at Sangam was 30 feet (seven feet above danger mark) and at Ram Munshi Bagh 22 feet (four feet above danger mark).
