Flood victims cry foul over meager compensation While the state government had promised the flood victims, whose houses were partially damaged in recent floods, that they would be paid Rs 45000 as interim relief, the situation on the ground belie the claims. The flood victims of Malbuchanin in north Kashmir’s Pattan while narrating their ordeal said, the relief operations being carried out by the state machinery is ‘crippled’. “More than 120 structures in our village were partially damaged during the recent floods. The revenue officer of the area also attested the number and the same were confirmed by the team of engineers flanked by two officers and deputy Tehsildar,” they said. However, the victims rued that Deputy Commissioner office undermined all the surveys and declared only 66 houses out of total 120 as partially damaged. “We submitted the pictures of all the houses with the cracks on walls and floors quite visible. It is bizarre that such documents and vital proof of evidence have been out rightly ignored by the office of the deputy commissioner in Varmul,” one of the flood victims said on the condition of anonymity. He added that the officials at DC office informed them that partially damaged houses will be given a mere amount of Rs 3800 as interim relief. “What will we do with this meager amount? You cannot buy even a few bags of cement with this money. It is mockery in the name of rehabilitation measures,” he said. The documents reveal that the authorities have decided to provide Rs 12600 to the people whose houses have been severely damaged while as Rs 3800 will be given as the relief to the people whose houses were partial damaged. The Deputy Commissioner Farooq Ahmad Lone said that the relief to the flood victims is being given in accordance to the SDRF norms. “Once additional amount is sanctioned in favor of the flood victims in the area, same shall be disbursed on priority basis,” he said. Asked about the complaints that several names have been dropped from the list, the DC said that the damage access has been carried out in a juts way and that possibly the names not being figured out in the first list shall be available in the second one. He also stressed that if any person has any complaint over the relief distribution, they must be brought before the notice of his office.
