Flora of the Four Corners Region: On Wednesday February 4th at 7 p.m., the public is invited to a program focused on the flora of the Four Corners region, presented by botanist, author, and professor, Ken Heil. Ken Heil is a botanist, author, and professor in Farmington, New Mexico. He introduces us to this unique flora described thoroughly with numerous keys in the recently published 1098-page “Flora of the Four Corners Region: Vascular Plants of the San Juan River Drainage – Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.” The book is a 2014 finalist for the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards and was fifteen years in the making. It includes full descriptions, artwork by Carolyn Crawford and Glenn Vandre, and line drawings by Linda Reeves. There have been approximately fifty contributors to the book, which was published by the Missouri Botanical Garden Press in 2013 with over one hundred photos. Ken is also founder, a major contributor to, and current Director of Operations of the San Juan College Herbarium. He is currently working with Dr. Steve OKane conducting field work and writing plant family treatments for a future publication,“The Flora of New Mexico”. Ken is also a member of the New Mexico Rare Plant Technical Council and has been a major contributor to the New Mexico Rare Plants website. Ken received his B.S. in Biology at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado and his M.S. in Biology from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. He has been an instructor of Biology at Navajo Community College (now Dine College) and Professor of Biology and Geology at San Juan College. He has taught Biology, Systematic Botany, Environmental Conservation, Historical Geology, Physical Geology, and an honors class on invasive organisms. He has won numerous teaching awards at both Navajo Community College and San Juan College. A short chapter meeting precedes the talk. Native plant books will be on display and available for purchase.
