Florida Education Association President Andy Ford sent out an email today regarding Opting Out, and I had to call him out on an inaccurate statement: I appreciate your email. However, this statement is inaccurate: Currently, there is no legal process for a parent or student to opt out of testing in Florida. Schools are legally required to give the tests, but students are not legally required to take them. According to information on the FL DOE website, students in third grade must attain a passing score on the Reading FCAT (or similar test), OR may show mastery through a progress portfolio. Students in high school must attain a passing score on their FCAT (or similar test), OR may attain a concordant score on the ACT or SAT. Students in high school must attain a passing score on the Algebra EOC, OR may attain a concordant score on the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT). Part of the DOE’s problem is misinformation, and it’s often difficult to tell if this misinformation is intentional or simply mistaken. As I said, I appreciate your altruistic motives, but we as educators must start investigating these half-truths for ourselves or risk become agents of misinformation.
