Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Sign Language Interpretation Program (SLIP)... Wilson Center/Lakeside Room 11901 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32246 Invites you to join in the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the “Deaf President Now” (DPN) movement with Dr. Angel M. Ramos, Ph.D. Born among the rats and roaches in the slums of New York City, of Puerto Rican parents, Dr. Ramos overcame poverty, a single parent family, and deafness to become the first person in his family to attend college; the only job the hearing world would give him was that of a taxi cab driver. With a strong belief that “everything happens for a reason” and “God never gives you anything you can’t handle,” Dr. Ramos will explain how he went from being a NYC taxicab driver to the first Deaf Hispanic to receive a doctorate degree from Gallaudet University, a Fullbright scholar, an international presenter, a school superintendent, and author. Dr. Ramos will share highlights from the 1988 DPN movement and how the movement was won, focusing on the importance of Partners–the importance of Deaf and hearing people working together. He will also share with the audience information about the 2006 protest at Gallaudet and how it was different from the 1988 movement. Following the presentation, Dr. Ramos will be available for questions and photos, along with a book purchase/signing opportunity.
