Florida Vérité There are many kinds of corruption in public life. Theres the obvious selling of influence, the no bid contracts, the free vacations via lobbyists who just happens to own a beach side beach house on Antigua – which surprise! Comes complete with full service offshore banking facilities, the resulting kick backs were not supposed to know about, (and that Rand Paul thinks should remain secret) the abuse of eminent domain every Floridian knows all too well. Today I hope to address a different one of them. This is where we allow our public servants to nudge nudge, wink wink their way through public life...WITHOUT out rage, complaint, hell, without notice usually. Well, one of these has just come to light. Perhaps youve heard of the worst case of partisan gerrymandering since Chicago aldermen controlled Chicago districts, or Jim Crow Fascism. And sadly it happened right here in Florida. Florida where Republicans have control both houses and the Governors mansion since 1998. Where every election cycle we get bludgeoned with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of out of state funded political ads telling us how we must be on guard against those evil (but strangely non existent) liberals who hate our constitution. How we need to be tough on crime and have morals and love our constitution. Unless of course, you happen to be a duly elected Republican. Then... what the hell! Then its all about: “If we manage to move the border of Ander Crenshaws district just a little, it becomes a + 16 for Ander! Hell! Democrats wont even oppose him at +16.” and so on. But it isnt THEIR corruption I wish to address. Politicians will descend to what ever level allowed by their constituents, and NO more. No, NOT their corruption, but OURS. When we allow these morally ambiguous sacks of jelly to KNOWINGLY (they destroyed records) circumnavigate our constitution for a political edge, WE become corruption farmers. If you approve dishonesty because you think it favorable, you will no longer be consulted when dishonesty is again chosen, this time perhaps NOT in your favor. We can NO LONGER afford the: well, thats politics” point of view. No. Those who are capable of this last round of gerrymandering cannot be trusted with anything. A liar and a crook in some - is a liar and a crook in all. NEVER doubt that.
