Focusing on the Future of Our Students - Richmond Hill GA LIVE interviewed Lori Davis, the Work Based Learning Coordinator and the Engineering Instructor at Richmond Hill High School. She is also a member of the Richmond Hill/Bryan County Chamber of Commerce through her relationship with the WBL. Work Based Learning is a laboratory classroom setting off campus at an employer’s site where students are learning real world skills for a career in their chosen high school pathway of study (ie: Health Science, Video Broadcast, Business, Engineering, Graphic Design, Early Childhood Education, JROTC, World Languages, Fine Arts). This program allows the students to connect what they learn in school with work-site application, enabling a smooth transition into the work force and/or education beyond high school. Richmond Hill High School has 27 students placed this semester and is projecting growth of 20% for next semester. The program is currently looking for 5 or 6 more employers. Ms. Davis would like to thank the current and past employer partners for your continued support, as well as the administration at RHHS. How can students benefit from WBL? • Students develop skills in chosen profession • The experience can help students in their Major field college classes • The experience can help students in their future professional jobs How can employers benefit from WBL? • Students can be paid or unpaid interns or apprentices • Develop connections to through mentorship of students in our community and they might stay or return when they are career ready • Sense of giving back to the community through developing our youth • Partnership with schools What are the employer’s responsibilities? • Remember that students are in class and receiving high school credit for the hours they are at the worksite • Provide a mentor at the worksite who is a level between management and the student – this gives the student somebody to speak to with concerns • Report to Ms. Davis when the student does not show up for work – the student would actually be skipping school • Complete evaluations that are provided by Ms. Davis and discuss evaluations with the student employee • Complete contracts that Ms. Davis prepares and send out and sign monthly calendars verifying students actual monthly hours worked WBL Eligibility and Requirements: • 11th and 12th Grade Students • On track for graduation • Minimum of 16 years of age • Minimum of 2.5 GPA • Good attendance and discipline record • Recommendations from other teachers • Reliable transportation and proof of insurance For more information about the Work-Based Learning Program, please contact Lori Davis at 912.459.2081.
