Folks, Happy New Year. The new year brings with it new ideas... Gigging musicians, tell me if you would find this useful: Im seeing lots of love for some of these amps that deliver Tweed Deluxe with higher headroom. I presume because its such a handy giggable packaging of an simple classic design. Though the Road Hogg Lite delivers that in spades I have it in mind to offer something new for those that like things a bit more simple, and it will be my first definitive step into the Fender realm for one of my designs (who knows, next I might do an amp with reverb!): Imagine a Tweed Deluxe (5E3), with the special pentode input stage used in the Chimey Limey (think EF86, but more reliable). This input sounds great and has great dynamics but also does exceptionally well with pedals. This along with other tweaks to the circuit will compete the pedal compatibility enhancements over a standard 5E3. This would be a single input with Volume and Tone controls and probably a panel switch to offer two voicings, one for single coils, and one for humbuckers. Uber simple. Feed that into a cathode biased 6L6 output section (which could also use EL34s nicely). This will give the amp giggable clean headroom but still not be brutally loud. The result is a simple yet familiar tone machine with useful refinements that works great as a pedal platform at a pleasantly tote-able 35lb, at a price point several hundred less than the fine chap from across the pond is offering his at. Wadaya think?
