Folks, NOW MORE THAN EVER WE NEED TO STAY ON THIS! Update on Nosey- Late last week I learned that Nosey had been seen by a panel of vets on Nov. 7 in Tallahassee. After doing some digging, this is the response that I have received so far. A FOIA request has been filed and will be shared once it is received. The positive news is the USDA seems to be stepping up its efforts to scrutinize Nosey. Thats a step in the right direction. The bad news is, according to this bit of information and telephone conversations, Nosey was NOT seen by elephant experts so, the results provided are not necessarily accurate. Among other things: What about her foot problems found in March of 2014? What about her chronic skin condition? What about x-rays? What blood tests were done? The following is USDA’s official response to questions concerning Nosey’s evaluation. Any additional questions concerning the evaluation should go through the FOIA office. Thank you for your inquiry. On November 7, 2014, APHIS Animal Care personnel observed the veterinary consultation and lameness of Nosey, conducted by a board certified zoo veterinarian and equine and lameness experts from the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The examination—which involved observing Nosey’s routine movements for an amount of time sufficient to allow the specialists to thoroughly assess her gaits, a physical examination, and blood sampling—revealed no clinical evidence of lameness or abnormalities that would interfere with normal function. Nosey was deemed to be in good physical condition, and no husbandry changes, treatment, or further diagnostics were recommended as a result of the consultation. APHIS will continue to monitor Nosey’s health in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act.
