LOUIS -- Indiana State basketball student-athletes Justin Gant and Lucas Eitel were honored this morning (March 6) by the league office as Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athletes. The MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams are determined by a postseason vote of conference sports information directors. Justin Gant, a criminology major, who carries a 3.49 cumulative GPA was named to the first team after earning second team honors one year ago. Lucas Eitel, who is finishing up his education degree this semester, carries a 3.50 cumulative GPA and was named to the second team for the second consecutive year. Gant has seen action in all Indiana State games, averaging 9.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He posted a season-best 23 points in the home victory over Truman State and scored a MVC-high 14 points in road victories over Southern Illinois and Northern Iowa. Gant owns a 47.3 shooting percentage and is averaging 0.8 blocked shots per game which is eighth-best in the league. Earlier this season, Gant was named to the All-Great Alaska Shootout Team. He was joined on the MVC Scholar Athlete First Team by Bradleys Walt Lemon, Jr., Southern Illinois Anthony Beane, Northern Iowas Chip Rank, Missouri States Nathan Scheer and Illinois States Nick Ziesloft. Eitel has also seen action in all Indiana State games, averaging 2.2 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. He posted a season-best nine points in the MVC opening victory over Loyola as well as a home game against Bradley. He drained a trio of second half trifectas to push the Sycamores ahead in the three-point victory over the Braves. Eitel is hitting 37 percent of his attempts from 3-point range. On the second team along with Eitel are: Northern Iowas Nate Buss and Max Martino, Loyolas Joe Crisman, Bradleys Tyshon Pickett and Wichita States Evan Wessel. The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference’s Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Capital One Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. He must have played in 75 percent of his team’s games. The No. 2 seed Indiana State Sycamores will play the winner of the No. 7 Bradley/No. 10 Loyola opening round game in the MVC Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday, March 8 inside Scottrade Center. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET) in a game that will be televised on the MVC TV Network as well as ESPN3.
