Following on from our undertaker posts earlier today! I found this from The Argus, April 1930 UNDERTAKERS CHARGES. How They Are Calculated. A J Holdsworth and Frank Holdsworth, trading as Josiah Holdsworth, undertakers, of Lygon street, Carlton, were plaintiffs in an action brought before Judge Foster, in the County Court yesterday. Dr Charles Joseph Parkinson, of Clarendon street. East Melbourne, claiming £45/16/ for funeral charges in connection with the death of the defendants wife, which occurred in May 1928 Judge Foster was told that defendant informed, plaintiffs that he considered their account excessive through his solicitors, he sent them a cheque for a reduced sum. which he asked them to accept in full settlement of their claim. The defence was that the plaintiffs account was excessive and unreasonable. Giving evidence on behalf of plaintiffs, Benjamin Matthews managing director of B. Matthews Pty Ltd , funeral directors, of Toorak, said that he considered that the amount charged was fair and reasonable. Mr Joske (for defendent) - That is your usual charge Witness- Between £35 and £50, based on the apparent circumstances of the client, say £75 for a barrister and £50 for a judge (Laughter). I have £30,000 invested in the business, and I have to get a certain amount of profit otherwise I should lose my job as director. Judge Foster give judgment for plaintiffs for the full amount claimed, with costs to be fixed. He said that he was very surprised that the case had been contested, as it should have been settled out of Court. It had been a painful and objectionable case upon which to adjudicate, and it must have been equally painful and objectionable to counsel. Mr Clyne (instructed by Mr A A, Sinclair) appeared for plaintiffs and Mr. Joske (instructed bv Messrs Parkinson and Wettenhall) appeared for the defendent.
