Food Festival at Vet Varsity gets an impressive response Ludhiana-15-December, 2014 Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organised ‘Food Festival’ on 15th December to popularise various value added meat, fish and milk products, developed by three colleges of the university, among the masses. Number of value added products prepared from chicken and fish were exhibited along with a wide range of milk products developed by the College of Veterinary sciences, College of Fisheries and College of Dairy Science and Technology. Dr. B.S. Dhillon, Vice Chancellor PAU and Dr. Sandeep Puri, Principal, Dayanand Medical College inaugurated the festival in presence of Dr V.K.Taneja, Vice chancellor, GADVASU and Dr K.S Sandhu, Member Punjab Public Service Commission besides Deans, Directors and other officials of the university. Department of Livestock Product and Technology, COVS displayed and sold various meat products prepared from chicken like nuggets, cutlet, patties, balls, meat pickle, along with meat based snack products like noodles, chicken samosa, waddi, and biscuit with speciality of being stored even at room temperature for more than 3 month. Besides this, newly introduced health products were emu meat curry and emu meat pickle, which attracted more attention and demand from the visitors. All the value added meat products drew a huge demand from the customers and were sold within a short period. College of Dairy Science and Technology introduced array of mouth dairy products categorised as health and value added products. The health products included probiotic masala lassi, fibre enriched dhoda barfi, flavored yoghurt while as Mozzarella cheese, Masala Paneer, Mango Lassi, Carrot Lassi, Jal Jeera and Mango whey drinks were among the value added products. Three new products introduced by the college included Low fat Kesar badam milk, reduced Caloried milk cake and low fat yoghurt ice cream which were admired by the visitors. Pinni making machine, designed and developed by College of Dairy Science and Technology, was one of the main attraction in the festival. Various ready to cook value added carp fish products like fish balls, fish cutlets and fish fingers, developed from deboned carp meat were displayed and sold by College of Fisheries. Various new value added products like fish steaks and fillets have also been developed, which were admired as a delicacy by the customers, as these were prepared from Pangas catfish reared for the first time at the Fish Farm of GADVASU. In addition to this, ready to eat whole pangas (cooked) was also available for sale which added the curiosity of visitors and was being praised to the extent that some of the customers relished it on the spot itself. The ‘Food Festival’ received an overwhelming response and visitors from within the university and local residents thronged the stalls. The food festival witnessed huge rush and enquiries regarding availability of various value added products. Dr. V.K Taneja, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU, said that the ‘Food Festival’ had been a great success and it is a new beginning for popularising value added products among the masses. He further stated that small group of farmers shall come forward to take up value addition as an enterprise for higher economic benefits. He revealed that university will keep on organising such festivals in future in order to generate awareness regarding nutritive value of these value added products and to popularise them among the consumers.
