Food security is defined as defined as all people in a household - TopicsExpress

Food security is defined as defined as all people in a household having enough food for an active healthy life at all times. Households classified as having low or very low food security are combined into the food-insecure category. It was reported in 2012 that more than one in seven US households (18 million, or 15 percent) experienced food insecurity at some time during the year. According to a study done by Feeding America, the increased need for food assistance observed within federal nutrition programs is mirrored in the number of clients seeking help from the charitable food assistance network. Despite known under counts of those seeking charitable help, government studies have documented increases in the number of individuals getting help from food pantries and emergency meal programs in 2012 compared with 2010. About 75% of the food distributed through our food pantry comes from Feeding America West Michigan. We are able to purchase food at a reduced rate, which allows our funds to reach more households. We have great volunteers that help to pick up orders and shop for food at Feeding America. Please contact us if you are interested in this opportunity.
