Footage from a demonstration that took place in Rio de Janeiro. (Be aware that this has been cropped and edited by staff working for DailyMail, so they have their own story to present.) The cause for protested is multifaceted, yet interconnected: 1) To increase the pay of teachers instead of pouring money into the 2014 World Cup, which does nothing in the immediate as far as wages or healthcare is concerned. 2) A protest to highlight and stand against the increasingly militarized police force of Rio de Janeiro, who swarm peaceful peaceful protesters, arrest indiscriminately, and fill the streets with weaponized chemicals. Often, corporate-controlled media will portray defensive actions taken by protesters; throwing back tear gas, building barricades, and de-arresting other people from the police, as violent or the work of dangerous anarchists to deter others from using similar tactics. You ever hear the anecdote believe nothing you hear and half of what you see? Keep that in mind as the larger context of world-wide protests and outrage at governments continue to grow.
