Football news Carrick Rangers made it seven points out of a possible nine under new boss Gary Haveron with a 2-1 win over Harland and Wolff Welders at Tillysburn Park this afternoon. After a non-descript opening quarter of an hour, it was Carrick’s Jody Lynch, paired up front with Richard Gibson, who broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when he met David Bell’s pin-point cross with a firm diving header which sailed past Lee Windrum in the home goal. Ten minutes later the visitors doubled their advantage when right-back Ian West rose above everyone else to head in a Lynch corner. The Welders had to wait just 180 seconds to pull a goal back as Dan McMurray capitalised on some sloppy marking to power home a left-foot drive past Gareth Deane. With goalscoring chances at a premium, the second session proved rather flat. Carrick looked the more likely in attack, and Richard Gibson should have at least tested the keeper with a header but he miscued wildly. Skipper Aaron Harmon then went close to notching his side’s third but his rasping effort from the edge of the box zipped narrowly over the bar. The Welders thought they had snatched a late equaliser when Aaron Sills had the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled offside. Carrick Rangers: Deane, West, O’Kane, McVeigh,Taggart, Harmon, Smyth (McConnell 90), Curran (McCloskey 63), Lynch, Gibson, Bell (Burns 87). Subs not used: Dougherty, Kelly. Referee: Peter McGrath (Newtownabbey).
