For 10 weeks, College students representing six Native American tribes from Southern Oregon and Northern California teamed with federal scientists and universities on restoration and monitoring projects in order to better understand one of the most complex Basins in the world: the Klamath River Basin. Rae Benson is the only student from Oregon, a Klamath tribal member and an Oregon Institute of Technology senior. Benson said this gave him a unique, system-wide experience that many professional researchers never have the chance to do. As a student in Oregon Tech’s environmental sciences program, Benson said support of the tribes and the federal agencies has given him confidence to pursue a career in fisheries. Benson was especially struck by the mentorship of Sue Mattenberger, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologist based out of Klamath Falls. For her part, Mattenberger said she was honored to be a part of the Klamath Leadership Development Program for Integrative Science and Traditional Knowledge.
