For Garys contest: I adore SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS (1941) for its sassy take on the world of filmmaking. It centers on a Hollywood director who wants to stop making lightweight, popular movies to focus on socially relevant dramas. However, he comes to recognize the power of comedy, and how it allows audiences to forget about their problems for a while. This is one of the things ST’s writer/director, Preston Sturges, did so well; that is, he tempered all his engaging comedies with a dollop of social realism. No wonder the Coen brothers’ O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? is a nod to this Sturges gem.
