For Ice Bucket Challenge Detractors, and a Further Challenge: There is a significant thread of resentment and even anger from some regarding the recent ALS ice bucket challenge. There are better things to support than ALS. Its just slacktivism. Its just raising money for an obscure disease that affects a small portion of people. The ALS Association is inefficient with the money it gets. Im sad to hear it all. No, ALS doesnt kill as many people as every year. No, supporting it wont do a damned thing to help those who have no ready access to potable water. Nor will supporting it do anything about cancer, corporate greed, climate change, politicians, gang violence, addiction, suicide, depression, anxiety, Crohns, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, neurosarcoidosis, malaria, cholera, ebola, influenza, child abuse, elder abuse, pedophilia, necrophilia, genocide, fratricide, matricide, patricide... and the list, truly, while not endless is certainly too damned long. And thats okay. Its actually OKAY to participate in the challenge... OR NOT... donate... OR NOT. Are there other charities deserving your attention? Of course there are. Is it okay to challenge others to donate through an act of silliness? Sure it is. Except, of course, ice water was chosen to help folks feel just a taste of the numbness someone with ALS experiences. But I digress. So, heres my challenge for the day: Please stop judging and chastising people for participating in the worthwhile cause of their choosing. Just because it doesnt match YOUR worthy cause doesnt mean they ought not do it. Please put your energy to better use.
