For Immediate Release August 9th, 2013 Fennell Celebrates Pan Am Field Hockey Opening Ceremonies Brampton: On behalf of the people of Brampton, it gives me immense pleasure to put down the welcome mat for fans, coaches and the internationally accomplished athletes who will compete during the 2013 Men’s Pan American Cup – Field Hockey tournament, Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell said today. Fennell made the comments during the tournament’s opening ceremonies at Cassie Campbell Community Centre, where the games will take place. Brampton is the only city in Ontario to boast an international grade water-based turf. “Brampton is a world-class city,” Fennell said. “Global sports competitions are another opportunity to show off our rich culture, engaged residents and unrivaled quality of life that thrives throughout Brampton. “What’s more, these same international tournaments are an added boost to our local economy. They’re an important platform to better market Brampton to the world.” The opening ceremonies featured performances that celebrated cultural diversity. Aboriginal, Punjabi, African and Latino cultures were on display through prayer, music and dance. Teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and the United States will compete during the weeklong competition (August 7-10). Fennell added “this Saturday our very own Team Canada will take to the field for their first game against Brazil. I wish Team Canada Captain, Scott Tupper, and all the players, the very best during this weeklong, intense competition.” Team Canada is also scheduled to play both Chile and Trinidad and Tobago. “It’s only August, and 2013 has already resulted in tremendous excitement for our City and for Brampton sports’ fans, players and the passionate volunteers who give countless hours to help organize and run tournaments,” Fennell concluded. -30-
