Hwy 117, Mentone, Al., continues its music series when world class Bluesman, Microwave Dave meets with the acclaimed Classical Guitarist Phil Weaver on the Kamama stage, Feb. 6th at 7PM. This Classical-Blues Cabaret began June 17, 2004 as an experimental collaboration between the two guitarists in the form of a cabaret performance at Huntsvilles Flying Monkey Arts Center. Neither Dave nor Phil knew what would happen, but at the end of the show to a standing-room only crowd, the audience was on its feet wanting more and some were dancing to the side of the stage. Since then there have been many more packed shows at the Flying Monkey and a promotional live concert DVD by the Alabama Film Co-op. For several seasons they have been performing with pianist Ingrid von Spakovsky, with standing ovations at Birmingham City Stages Festival, the W.C. Handy Festival, City Lights and Stars Concert Series, the Princess Theatre in Decatur, and Gorham’s Bluff Institute. A powerful guitarist who can play fast and muscular or deep, down and dirty Delta blues, Microwave Dave Gallaher began his musical career in the mid-60s. Microwave Dave and the Nukes have played with notables Jerry Boogie McCain and Bo Diddley. They maintain a constant touring schedule with regular gigs in all states of the Deep South, as well as performances throughout the United Sates and abroad. The band has released a number of CDs, including their most recent release Down South Nukin’, as well as Nothin But the Blues(1998), and Gotta Get a Cadillac (2002). Daves solo credits include a recently released CD, American Peasant (2004), recorded live at the Kaffee Klatch in Huntsville. His radio show, Talkin the Blues With Microwave Dave, airs twice weekly on public radio stations in Huntsville. Recently Dave and the Nukes performed live on the NPR show WhadYa Know and brought down the house. Classical guitarist Phil Weaver has been performing for over 30 years in the United States and abroad. He was the first guitarist to be awarded an individual artists fellowship from the Alabama State Council of the Arts. He performed his European debut with solo concerts for the Nonsuch Guitar Society in London and the Old Malthouse Music Society in Sawbridgeworth. His collaborations with pianist Ingrid von Spakovsky include a CD on ACA Digital that received rave reviews in Fanfare and 20th century Guitar magazines, interviews on BBC York and Temple Public Radio, a tour of England, a New York City recital debut, and performances throughout the U.S., including performances at Vanderbilt University. Phils music video Danza with filmmaker Jon Sawa has been critically acclaimed by the composer Edin Solis and Bill Kanengiser of LAGQ. Phil Weaver serves on the music faculty at UA Huntsville. The Kamama Music Series features artists that perform original, singer/songwriter, traditional, Americana, and Roots Music. Sandra Padgett will serve as host of the event .
