For Immediate Release South Carolina Autism Society’s Statement on the Need for Training in Light of a Child that Drowned after Disappearing from his Family’s Home and the Young Man Who was Recently Tased by Local Law Enforcement: The South Carolina Autism Society (SCAS) plans on conducting training for law enforcement and emergency responders in May, 2015. The SCAS is bringing in two experts that have performed training around the country involving autism and informed response. SCAS plans to hold trainings in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston, SC. Specific dates and locations will be announced soon. “The autism community needs to work together with law enforcement and emergency responders in an effort to maintain safety and minimize trauma to those affected by autism spectrum disorders. The South Carolina Autism Society wishes to express our sympathy for the tragedy in Little River, SC and the loss of a precious child’s life. Additionally, we would like to provide education and awareness to professionals and citizens throughout our community to avoid any future incidents with law enforcement such as what occurred most recently in Greenville, SC. We commend the Greenville Police Department for dropping the charges against Mr. Anderson, and we thank the community leaders who have advocated on behalf of Mr. Anderson. We have confidence that the Greenville Police Department will complete a thorough investigation in to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Anderson’s arrest, and we eagerly await the results of that investigation.” -Kim Thomas, president & CEO of South Carolina Autism Society
